Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt this church (his smaller masterpiece) in 1672-1679, after the original - along with many other churches in the city - were destroyed by the great fire of London.
The church destroyed in the fire was a 15th century gothic church, and that replaced an earlier 7th century Saxon church. As if that is not enough of a pedigree, it is believed that the 3rd century Mithras Temple was on the same site. It is also the Lord Mayor's official church.
Inside the dome is decorated with intricate plasterwork and looks like a mini St Paul's Cathedral. The cream of the plaster walls contrasts strikingly with the black of the pulpit and furniture. The Henry Moore altar was added in 1987. The woodwork is by William Newman.
It was at this church in 1953 that its rector, Chad Varah, founded "The Samaritans - to befriend the suicidal" and in 1974 "Befrienders International". Over the years the Samaritans have saved countless lives.
The first telephone used by the Samaritans is on display inside the church, covered by a glass dome, rather like the Bat Phone. When we wrote to St Stephen Walbrook during the course of our research for Virtual London, we were very impressed that the great man, Chad Varah, replied personally to us.
